We get this question a lot: “Can I use a Y-cable with two male plugs to get more power from my outlets?”
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.
Most outlets in your home are connected to the same circuit—meaning they share one breaker in your breaker box. So even if you plug into two outlets in the same room, you’re still drawing from the same 15 or 20 amp circuit, providing you with only up to 2500 Watts.. A Y-cable like that wouldn’t give you more power—just a false sense of it.
There’s another major issue: safety. Any dual male cable (also known as a “suicide cable”) can expose live prongs when plugged in, posing a serious risk of shock or fire. That’s one reason why these cables aren’t manufactured or sold.
So what can you do instead?
If you need more power, consider using a different outlet on a separate circuit—like a dryer outlet. These often provide up to 50 amps.
But here’s the thing: your appliance or tool will only pull the amount of power it’s rated for. Even if you’re plugged into a 50 amp outlet, if your equipment is only rated for 20 amps, that’s all it will draw.
The key takeaway: using the right adapter or power cord for the job matters—and safety should always come first.
